IGDA Stammtisch survey results
As some of you may know, I did a little survey using SurveyMonkey after the Stammtisch on December 4th. Here are the results:
- 18 people did the survey. My guesstimate is this is about 30-40% of attendees. Given that not all attendees RSVPed on Anyvite, and thus did not get the survey email, I think that’s a pretty good turnout.
- 8 people said the Stammtisch was great, 6 people said it was nice, and 3 said it was OK. (1 person didn’t attend.) So that’s pretty positive.
- The number one complaint was smokiness. I agree, but short- to medium-term I’d like to stick with WerkzeugH. More on this later.
- 13 people would attend a Stammtisch every 2 months of more often. I am going to go with 2 months as I believe that’s the right frequency between “Omigod those guys again” and “IGD What?”. We’ll see how that goes.
- 7 out of 18 people would like to do more than just a Stammtisch. The most common suggestions were presentations on game design, technology as well as post-mortems and company overviews. I am also interested in these but I want to decouple them from the regular Stammtisch, as presentation nights are trickier to organize. Also, more on this later.
- A lot of people said thanks for organizing the Stammtisch. You’re welcome!
IGDA Vienna - back from the dead!
Around 50 Viennese game developers gathered at WerkzeugH last Thursday for an IGDA Stammtisch - the first IGDA event in Vienna since March 2006! We pretty much filled the place from 8 till midnight. Apart from the smokiness it was a great success.
For people unfamiliar with the word, a “Stammtisch” is a table in a pub or restaurant reserved for regular customers. Or, in this case, it is an informal get-together for people interested in a common subject. The first couple of IGDA meetings in Vienna started out that way.
The main reason nothing has happened around the IGDA in Vienna since 2006 is that Clemens Beer, the founder of the Vienna chapter, has good reasons for not investing too much time in the IGDA, and nobody else - including myself - got off their Arsch to do something.
Right now, my attitude is that it’s better to have a regular meeting for game developers in Vienna that actually takes place than to have fancy events that only happen once every couple of years. So although there are more things that could be done related to the IGDA in Vienna, I want to take things slow at first, organize a Stammtisch every 2 months, and see where things go. As long as it’s just me doing the organizing, I want to make sure I can deliver what I promise.
Which leads to my last point: Please send me your feedback and ideas for the Vienna chapter of the IGDA.
Coming up next: Pictures from last week’s meeting, and an easy way to find out when the next IGDA Stammtisch is.
Rockstar officially confirms closure of Vienna studio
Former employees to be offered new positions ‘where possible’
Rockstar has officially confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that its Austrian development studio, Rockstar Vienna, has been closed - but added that some employees will be offered new jobs within the company.
Rumours of the closure began to emerge earlier today, with one Rockstar Vienna employee breaking the news in a blog posting.
This morning, a Rockstar spokesperson told GI.biz: “Yes, we can confirm the studio was closed on Thursday. Employees will be offered packages in accordance with Austrian law, as well as other job opportunities within Take-Two and Rockstar Games where possible.”

New Job Postings, Updated News, a Big Thank you
Hi all and a big thank you to all the attendees of IGDA Vienna’s recent chapter meeting. As we’ve had some time to rest up and enjoy a brief holiday we’re slowly getting back into the swing of things. We are currently at work planning an “IGDA Vienna Summer Social” which will be a bit more informal, featuring a brighter atmosphere and quite a bit more fresh air. More details will be posted as they are confirmed, but this should be happening mid-summer. In the meantime, we’ll still be posting updated job listings from Vienna developers and and new release/company news which gets sent our way. In the meantime, thank you all for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the next chapter event.
